Verdict: YES! Qimin Organic Hotpot is the first organic hotpot in Shanghai. Founded by the same people behind Green & Safe, Qimin Organic Hotpot is a clean & pleasant hotpot experience. It's perfect for dates and small groups (though I did have a dinner here once with 8 people which worked fine). Casual and fun, I LOVE this place!

[Guizhou, China] A Look into the Buyi (or Bouyei) Tribe 布依族

This week (mid-March 2017), I took a 3-day excursion to Guizhou, China to visit a village inhabited by the Buyi tribe (布依族) to take a close look at their rich heritage of craftsmanship into plaid weaving.

To get to the village, I took a 3-hour plane ride from Shanghai to Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou and then another 1-hour high-speed train ride to Guanling (关岭). From there, I took a 1-hour car ride to a village close to Anshun (安顺), where many Buyi people reside. 

History

A sub-clan of the Baiyue Clan (百越名族), the Buyi ancestors have been living in the Southern and Northern river basins for around 4000-5000 years. Referred to as "Zhongjia" (仲家) by historians, the Buyi tribe is most-known for their rice-farming heritage.

Currently, the tribe is comprised of over 3.2 million people who live mainly in Guizhou, Yun'nan and Sichuan provinces. 

Clothing

With over 3,000 years of cultural inheritance, the Buyi people's traditional clothing has become part of their identity.

The Colors of Buyi

Mainly inspired by their rice farming culture, their garments are made with locally grown cotton and traditional crafting techniques such as indigo wood root dyeing, Buyi plaid weaving, brocade, batik, tie-dye, embroidery and silver ornaments making.  

The colors and patterns of their plaids are mainly inspired by their beautiful environment: surrounding blue skies, white clouds, evergreen mountains and clear waters. 

Symbolism of the Plaids

The plaid patterns are characterized by a complex arrangement of tiny squares within squares lined within a grid. The grid symbolizes their motherland, China, while the squares represent the multitude of scattered clans spread across the country. The tiny squares within represent the Buyi people in the clans.

Reflecting their harmonious relationship with nature, specific patterns take the shape of waves, thunder storms, mountain curves, contour of terraced fields, rice grains, fish bones, birds, sunbeams and more.

Purpose

What an enlightening experience to see these lovely crafts entirely made by hand by these women. Which brings me back to the main purpose of my trip: to learn more about their culture, history and capabilities and help them raise cultural awareness. In short - to help the Buyi tribe sustain their traditional handicrafts and heritage by connecting them with pertinent parties (eg. artists, designers, brands) so they can market their product and sell them at a price that's well-deserved.

Tasty Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop (正斗粥麵專家) is a Hong Kong-based casual restaurant chain that serves traditional Cantonese cuisine. Think comfort food and casual dimsum. Despite serving humble foods like noodle soups and congee, the institution’s been awarded the “Best of the Best Culinary Award – Gold with Distinction” from Hong Kong Tourism Board and its original branch (Ho Hung Kee) even carries a prestigious Michelin one-star crown.

Having visited all its Hong Kong locations and feeling consistently satisfied every meal, I had moderately high hopes for its Shanghai branches to be decent. I happened to be near its iapm location on Sunday and gleefully hopped inside. I was surprised to find the restaurant (or should I say fancy food court enclosure?) situated in an open area on the 5th floor. What is partially so admirable about Tasty Congee in Hong Kong is its successful integration of the luxury and the modest—having the refined atmosphere and décor of a high-end restaurant but serving down-to-earth unpretentious and simple dishes. The interiors are clean, contemporary and spacious—complete with fitting traditional Chinese ornaments and gold accents. I mean, what’s there not to like when you can enjoy affordable and tasty “jook,” shrimp rolls and wantun noodles at a full-service restaurant without having to worry about sanitation? You also won’t find yourself swimming in a sea of clattered shrieks and voices that’s typical at a cha chaan tang. Hence my astonishment when I found Shanghai iapm’s Tasty Congee to be located in a shared area with Bistro BB1 Vietnamese Delights. Ermm, okay. But maybe I shouldn’t be too quick to judge. Perhaps the food lives up to its name, I told myself. The environment is upscale considering its fast-service restaurant positioning here—at least the food seems to be cooked to order, the waitresses are reasonably attentive, and the seats are fairly comfortable. Let’s see if the food’s any good.

The menu is not extensive but enough to have a reasonable selection. I ordered the dimsum staples: steamed shrimp dumplings (晶莹鲜虾饺), steamed chicken feet with black bean sauce (百味酱蒸凤爪), steamed pork buns (叉烧包), mixed steamed rice noodle rolls (混酱肠粉), original beef brisket noodle soup (原汁柱侯牛腩面), sliced tenderloin beef congee (生滚牛肉粥), stir-fry Chinese broccoli (芥兰) and stir-fry flat rice noodles with beef (干炒牛河).  

Food arrived in a jiffy. Everything was served onto our table with 5 to 10 minutes. Devour mode: on.

The chicken feet, beef brisket noodle soup and rice noodle rolls were standard. The steamed shrimp dumplings came out smaller than average and although the prawn-pork filling had a good commixture of savory pork and prawn, it lacked a springy texture and juiciness. The semi-translucent skin wrapping was a tad too thick as well. The char siu baos (pork buns), however, were fantastic. The meat to bun ratio was on-point. The buns were clearly freshly steamed, all soft, plump and fluffy encasing a center of nicely mixed sweet and savory honey-glazed barbecue pork. 

Most of the dishes weren’t memorable and not on par in terms of taste and quality as their Hong Kong counterparts, but satisfying. For a food court meal, it was outstanding. I wouldn’t complain if the meal came out to a justifiable price but unfortunately it did not. I still do not understand how the bill came out to be 450RMB for two people eating your run-of-the-mill dimsum dishes at a communal dining area. We didn’t even order drinks.

For ~$75USD dollars, I could’ve gone to Lei Garden downstairs. Heck, I could’ve gone to Ah Yut Abalone Restaurant for an all-round perfect dimsum meal. I guess I can’t say I would come back here again even if I am in the area.

I heard that this is the best gelateria in Shanghai. If that is true, then Shanghai needs to step up on its gelato offerings.

I generally prefer gelato to ice cream because it’s more dense and intensely-flavored. What is the difference, you may ask. Gelato feels creamier than ice cream for three reasons:

  • Gelato uses more milk as opposed to cream and egg yolks ice cream. Hence gelato has a lower fat content.
  • Gelato contains less air as it is churned at a much slower speed (less overrun) than ice cream.
  • Gelato is served at a slightly higher temperature than ice cream (otherwise it would be too frozen).

My friend and I tried a couple of flavors and in the end both decided to get a scoop each of their signature “Le Creme Milano” flavor (Hazelnut, Ferrero Rocher, Nutella chocolate mixing).

We both agreed that the taste was a little off. It didn’t have the full, rich and smooth delicacy that bona fide gelato in Europe has (eg. Amorino, Berthillon, Gelupo).

[Huangshan] Yellow Mountain 黄山 - 3D2N Hiking Trip

Huangshan, or Yellow Mountain, has become one of China’s most recognizable and frequented tourist attraction sites. Located in Huangshan City of Anhui province, the massif spans across a total expanse of 1,200 square kilometers with a core area of approximately 161 square kilometers. Renowned for its natural beauty, unique geological history, and geomorphology, the cliffs first formed over 100 million years ago during the Mesozoic era due to crustal movements and subsequent uplifts.

There is a Chinese saying that goes, "Mount Huangshan is picturesque all the year round.” Most known for its five wonders: sea of clouds, uniquely shaped pine trees, jagged granite peaks, springs, and magnificent sunrises, Yellow Mountain is worth seeing at anytime of the year. It is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is often the subject of traditional Chinese paintings, literature, and poetry. Nowadays, it is one of the most photographed icons of China.

My trip to Huangshan was an impromptu one; I flew in to Shanghai from Hong Kong and hopped on a five-hour road trip with my family and friends immediately upon landing.

I was very delightfully surprised by how well preserved and logistically organized the site was. The infrastructure of the whole region is generally safe and steady. Tens of thousands of stone steps have been carved into the mountains over the years and the paths are clearly marked. There are directional signs, maps, and checkpoints wherever you go. Two trails are available if you decide to skip the cable cars and start hiking from the very bottom. There is the longer “Western Steps” (14km, ~6-7 hours) with mind-blowing views or the shorter “Eastern Steps,” which is still lovely but comparatively less grandeur (~2-3 hours). Of course, you can always take the cable cars up to the upper reaches of the peaks (which is what we did) and start walking from there.

There are only two things I’d warn people about. One is to keep alert at all times and watch out for the mountain porters who carry food and supplies up to the hotels and stores at the mountaintops. Remember that they’re carrying cargos with weights heavier than themselves (I’m guessing 140-180 pounds) and balancing them on the long poles rested on their shoulders and backs. It would be stupid not to sidestep for them as they’re moving swiftly on the thrust of momentum and aren’t fully in control of their movements. Stay out of their path if you don’t want them to collide into you.

All the materials available to tourists and residents on the mountain are hauled up and down on the backs of the carriers. This includes food, drinks, construction materials, hotel supplies, linens, and all other goods and necessities. To say that I’m in awe would be undermining my respect for the hardworking porters. How difficult it must be to be carrying beasts of burden everyday back and forth on these ceaseless steps...

My second warning would be to plan your hiking route ahead of time and make realistic estimates about your pace. The cable cars shut down early afternoon and being trapped in the middle of the mountains after dark would not be a good idea. It'd probably take (at least) another 6 hours to hike back to where you started (also because there are barely any night lights, so bring a flashlight just in case).

There are hotels of various prices at the mountaintops and I recommend staying over for at least a night to try to catch the sunrise at 4:30am. We weren't so fortunate in seeing the sunrise however. We woke up early, climbed to a peak, and waited. We waited and it started to drizzle but we continued to wait, to no avail. The sun had sneakily creeped up behind the heavy clouds. It was beautiful and a great experience regardless and I'd love try it again another time.

 I had high expectations prior to this trip and it turned out to be nothing less than exceptional. There's no question that I'll be back again in the wintertime someday to catch the sunrise and of course, the sea of clouds.

This was my last dinner in in Asia this summer and certainly one of the best.

A contemporary Asian-inspired French restaurant, Bon Vivant was founded by one of Singapore’s most internationally-known celebrity chefs, Justin Quek (郭文秀). He's been classically trained at some of the best kitchens in France and England during the early '90s and became the first Singaporean to be appointed personal chef at the French Embassy in Singapore in 1992. He was the man who brought Singaporean restaurant Les Amis to great fame and the first recipient to receive Chef of the Year award from World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence. 

Unlike Quek’s more grandiose endeavors in Singapore (Sky on 57 at the Marina Bay Sands hotel) and Taiwan (Justin’s Signature and Just in Bistro & Wine Bar), Bon Vivant is a small and quietly hidden space on the top floor of a luxury mall. The immaculately prepared and experimental French gourmet here makes this one of the finest restaurants in Shanghai. I'll definitely be coming back when I return to Shanghai again.

Oh yes. That’s right. It tasted as heavenly as it sounds. Wrapped in a blanket of truffle oil, the foie gras was buttery rich but not overpowering. The combination was surprisingly not as heavy or greasy as I would have imagined. The skin, delicately thin, was firm yet soft in texture. This is street food turned extravagant and perfect fusion of the East and West.

This is what summer tastes like and balanced out the heaviness of the first dish. The seafood and fruits were fresh and the dressing was tangy and flavorful, but what made the dish unique and exception was the sprinkled sesame on top. I’d order this on any hot summer day!

Surrounded by lobster foam, this sea bass had a crispy skin and tender insides. Another perfect example of how fusion food can taste amazing when made correctly. Garlic chives (Chinese chives, 韭黄, or “nira” in Japanese) is a common ingredient in Chinese cooking but not so often used in Western dishes. In this case, the chives enhanced the flavors of the sea bass without it being overwhelming as garlic chives are actually more mild and subtle in taste than regular chives.

I tend to shy away from ordering steak (if I have the option to do so) just because I’m very picky about how my meat is prepared. I like them tender and slightly raw, but please, without a trace of blood. I know I’m difficult, but hey if you’re going to ask me how well done I want it to be then you better make it that way.

This steak was exactly what I wanted. The meat quality is top notch and the preparation even better. I don’t remember the last time I was perfectly satisfied with my steak. The truffle mushroom sauce was exceptional and full of flavor. Mmmm….

Holy cow. If you like chocolate, you’ll be filled with pure joy. I was stuffed beyond words by dessert time but nothing could stop me from devouring this whole baked molten chocolate lava cake and wiping the entire plate clean. When the warm gooey chocolate goodness melted in my mouth, it melted my heart too.

Why elephants, you may ask. At least that was my question when I finally found the entrance (it’s a little hidden if you don’t know what you’re looking for). It is located inside The Happy House, at the former venue of “el Willy.” If you can’t find it,jJust follow the elephant path - look for the big elephant outside on the street and walk straight into the little alley. Inside you’ll find the big door leading not only to elEFANTE, but also to Sushi Oyama and La Vinoteca Torres.

elEFANTE is the new brainchild of chef/restaurateur Willy Truliàs Moreno, the man behind “el Willy.” It is a Mediterranean deli and restaurant with an elephantine menu (haha, get it?) that offers both traditional and eclectic Spanish/Italian influenced dishes such as imported cheeses and charcuterie, “fried egg with grilled scampi, wild mushrooms and pedo ximenez reduction” and “organic crudités with ‘eastern dips’: baba ganoush, hummus, taramosalata.”

Seared snapper with grilled vegetables sumac and vierge sauce (¥68 RMB)

I was disappointed to find the snapper a little overcooked. The grilled vegetables were fine but the overall flavors of the dish weren’t all that exciting. It was not bad but I certainly expected something more avant-garde from el Willy.

Squid ink pasta is always a hit or miss. The spaghetti was decent and I loved the scallops but again, it wasn’t anything particularly special. There was just something lacking from this dish that makes me want to come back for it.

However, the restaurant décor is adorable. Go scavenge for all the elephants!
